Well, here is new music from me. Three short tunes that I think could fit in the Chill Out shelf, if I would release this physically and your music store has such a shelf.
Chill Out. What exactly is it? Is that even a genre? I feel like there aren’t real rules, other than „make sure it’s slow and quiet“. How slow and how quiet, is up to the producer. Does it need a beat? Is it allowed to have vocals? And when does Chill Out become Ambient?
The KLF’s CHILL OUT album is supposed to simulate a car ride through the US, with music and radio snippets that you hear on the radio, sound effects of trains and other stuff. Jam & Spoon’s TRIPOMATIC FAIRYTALES 2002 is at times such an assault to the senses that it freaks me out when I listen to it on headphones in a dark room. (Still a great album though.) Aphex Twin’s SELECTED AMBIENT WORKS #2 sounds like Halloween music. Moby’s several Ambient and Chill Out records, from his album that is actually called AMBIENT, to several bonus discs of his regular long players and his newest one FUTURE QUIET vary between „Synth pads without anything else“, „Synth pads with a beat“, „Instrumental piano music“, „slow Pop songs“ and everything inbetween. Different Chill Out and Ambient compilations that I own have everything, from slow Minimal Techno tunes to film scores and pop ballads.
My point is: I’m sure there are some people who will tag this mini EP as Ambient and/or Chill Out while others will scoff at the thought of it. Don’t ask me what it is. It’s kinda soothing, but also not. Which is also its name. And proudly made without AI.
