If you know me, you know that CDs are my preferred medium of owning music. You also know that my CD collection is huge and still growing. So every once in a while, I’m gonna post some shit about it here. Maybe also in video form, but I haven’t decided that yet.
Anyway, today I had something nice in my mailbox: The very first MAYDAY compilation! I won’t call it rare, but it was surprisingly difficult to get, to be honest. It definitely took me longer than with all the others.

As you can see, there is a pretty cool line-up to find. I mean, motherfucking APHEX TWIN! Also the usual suspects Westbam and Marusha and then Sven Väth, Tanith, Joey Beltram. And now you can say that my 20th century (+1) Mayday collection is complete. As you can see below, I now own every compilation that came out between 1992 and 2000.

Listening to all of them, will take you on a nice journey through the evolution of electronic music. The first two are already hard and raw, but then it gets really loud and fast for a few years. Your kids think Dubstep was hard? That shit is chill out area stuff, compared to the 150-180bpm Hardcore sounds, that we raved to back in the days!
But then, around LIFE ON MARS (1996), the music calmed down. That old school Techno sound died down and got more and more replaced by (Tech) House. People like Daft Punk, Armand van Helden or DJ Sneak brought fresh wind into the scene and honestly, there are many tracks from SONIC EMPIRE (1997) onwards, that I still drop in my sets today and nobody notices how old they are! One could say that dance music barely evolved since the late 90s, but I wouldn’t go that far. Maybe it just became more polished?
That’s a discussion for another day.
Talking about days: Have a nice day!
