This probably won’t mean much to most of you, unless you grew up in North Rhine-Westfalia during the 90s. Our radio of choice was a station named Eins Live (also known as L1VE), a youth oriented public broadcaster, that provided us with our daily dose of pop music and comedy. Personally I always thought their best program ran after 8pm. During weekdays we got the Kultkomplex, which focused on not-exactly-mainstream alternative music and introduced me to a bunch of great artists who normally don’t get so prominently featured on commercial radios.
But Saturday night was always favourite. That’s when Piet Blank (These days better known as part of Blank & Jones) had his show Partyservice. The concept was simple. From 8pm to midnight, he would play all kinds of cool dancemusic. Unmixed, but nonstop. Mostly more on the commercial side, but always good and in the end it was the style that we loved! What Friday nights with BBC Radio 1 were for all my UK peeps, was the Saturday night with the Partyservice for me. I still cherish the memories of those nights I spent playing video games in my room, the radio running in the background (Yeah, I didn’t really go out that often) and then after midnight watching some softporn on cable (But that’s a whole different topic).
Anyway, today Piet Blank uploaded a show from 25 years ago onto the Blank & Jones Mixcloud. These things are pretty rare to find, being broadcasted during a time when only very few people listened to radio on the internet, even less had enough space to record full shows from there and pretty much nobody uploaded and shared them with others.
So enjoy the time capsule! I sure do!
